Frequently Asked Questions - Food Bank Donation Program

How does the CFO Cares Program work?
The CFO Cares Program works through farmer-members registering for the program via an online form (CLICK HERE), or by calling the CFO Office at (905) 637-0025 and asking for the CFO Cares Program Coordinator.

The program works as follows:

  • Farmer-Members indicate which quota period they would like to grow up to 300 birds (or 700kgs), and inform their hatchery when they make their chick order.
  • Farmer-members then grow the additional birds with their current flock, and send them to the processor at the end of the growing period.
  • After the farmer-member is paid by the processor for all the chicken, CFO will send the farmer-member an invoice for the 700kg.
  • Once CFO has processed the farmer-member’s payment, CFO works with its partner, the Ontario Association of Food Bank (OAFB) to purchase and deliver chicken to food banks across Ontario.

How do I sign up for the program?
Signing up is easy. CLICK HERE to go to the online form on the ontariochicken.ca website, or by call the CFO Office at (905) 637-0025 and ask for the CFO Cares Program Coordinator. All you need to know is your CFO Connects 4-digit farm number, and the quota period in which you would like to donate.
When can I sign up for the program?
You cannot sign up for the program in the same quota period as you are currently growing due to CFO policy and regulation, however, you can sign up for any quota period thereafter.
Can I donate more or less than the 300 chickens or 700 kilograms?
Chicken Farmers of Canada has set a restriction of 700 kilograms as the maximum allowed under the program for a calendar year. Due to administrative and delivery costs, CFO Cares would prefer all donations to be at least 100 chickens (or 235kg) – any less than this amount means that the cost of delivering the donation would outweigh the donation itself. For farmer-members wishing to do less than 100 chickens, you can complete the home consumption/small donation form (Form 36).
Can I donate more than one time per year, spreading my donation out over several quota periods?
CFO Cares would prefer one single donation for a number of reasons, primarily because the conglomerated buying power of wholesale. In addition, there are efficiencies found in delivery costs and administration that mean more of your donation is spent on chicken.
Can I donate to my local foodbank?
Yes, you can! The OAFB has foodbanks across Ontario. CLICK HERE to find a food bank in your community.

If your local food bank does not appear here, CFO Cares can still arrange a delivery, however, your donation may depend on the food bank’s capacity for storing chicken and ability to received deliveries.

What if I have a poor crop and cannot make my pledged donation?
We do have the capacity to move your donation forward to the next quota period if that is better for you. However, this may impact the timing of your donation and your tax receipting in that calendar year.
Who can I call for more information on the program?
