Humane Euthanasia Training Program for CFO Farmer-Members

March 14, 2016 - Chicken Farmers of Ontario (CFO) is committed to the continuous improvement of best management poultry health and welfare practices. Ontario chicken farmers have a long-standing reputation for growing and supplying superior quality chicken to meet the needs of industry customers and consumers, while maintaining a high standard of animal care.

In accordance with a recent CFO Board policy decision, and as part of the Board’s commitment to implementing best-in-class animal care policies and regulations, all CFO farmer-members are now required to participate in the CFO Humane Euthanasia Training Program over the course of this calendar year.

There are two components of the training program that need to be completed by December 31, 2016:

  1. Completion of in-class training OR online video training: The quota holder from each farm must attend in-class training or online video training. More details on training dates and location, as well as access to the video will become available shortly.

  2. Completion of an On-Farm Euthanasia Plan: Each farm will document training, method of euthanasia used and backup method of euthanasia. CLICK HERE to access the updated On-Farm Food Safety Assurance and Animal Care Policy No. 223-2016 (Schedule D) for more detailed information on the training documentation.
Further to the above elements of this new training program, the 2016 requirements will be checked as part of CFO farmer-members’ annual audit requirements. In addition, in 2017 on-farm validation of euthanasia training will occur.

In the meantime, if any CFO farmer-members would like a refresher on acceptable euthanasia procedures, it is highly recommended to contact your veterinarian. Furthermore, if any CFO farmer-members have on-farm employees, please take the time to educate and demonstrate proper euthanasia handling and technique and document all the training that is received.
