CFO Recognized for Food Donation Program

CFO Cares wins Paul Mistele Award

GUELPH, ON – October 25, 2019 – Chicken Farmers of Ontario (CFO) was named the recipient of the Paul Mistele Award, in recognition of the CFO Cares: Farmers to Food Banks Program. The award was presented by Feed Ontario last night at the Harvest Gala hosted by Farm and Food Care.
Named for the late farm leader who founded Ontario Pork’s Donate-A-Hog program in 1998, the Paul Mistele Memorial Award recognizes agricultural partners who have shown a significant and enduring commitment to ending hunger in Ontario.
“The CFO Cares Farmers to Food Banks program has played an invaluable role in our ability to distribute high quality, nutritious protein to the 507,000 adult, children, and seniors that visit food banks across Ontario every year,” says Amanda King, Interim Executive Director at Feed Ontario. “On behalf of the provincial food bank network we would like to thank Chicken Farmers of Ontario for their incredible support and the role that they are playing to help address and raise awareness of hunger and poverty in our province.”
The CFO Cares: Farmers to Food Banks Program provide CFO farmer-members the opportunity to donate 700 kilograms of fresh, locally-grown, nutritious chicken to local food banks across Ontario. Since 2015, CFO Cares has donated over 3 million meals of chicken.
“CFO appreciates the strong partnership we have with Feed Ontario, and together, we are able to provide safe, high quality, nutritious, locally-grown chicken to those in need in our community,” said Ed Benjamins, Chair of Chicken Farmers of Ontario. “Chicken farmers from across the province have stepped up and joined the CFO Cares: Farmers to Food Banks Program, in order to do their part to tackle food insecurity in Ontario.”
In 2019, nearly 500 chicken farmers are donating through the CFO Cares: Farmers to Food Banks Program, and donations are on track to exceed 1.2 million meals this year.
“Our mission is to build value and shape the future, together with our farmer-members and partners like Feed Ontario,” said Rob Dougans, President & CEO of Chicken Farmers of Ontario. “Momentum for the CFO Cares: Farmers to Food Banks Program continues to grow, and we strive to take our efforts to combat hunger to the next level.”

About the CFO Cares Farmers to Food Banks Program:

As Ontario chicken farmers, it’s our job to provide our fellow Ontarians with locally grown chicken of the highest quality. But that’s not all. We also have a responsibility to our province, to our communities and to each other to stand up and help-out when needed.
That’s why every year, farmers donate 300 chickens to local food banks. Food banks that feed thousands of Ontarians who would otherwise go without. Food banks that put food on the tables of people living directly in our communities. So that we can help the ones who need us most, with the resources we already have. Not only because it feels good, but because we can.
