Solve Import Control Issues, CFO Tells Senate Agriculture Committee

OTTAWA, ON - May 3, 2016 - Ontario chicken farmers are looking to the federal Government to become more effective at monitoring and enforcing existing rules and regulations around the importation of legal and illegal chicken products. That was the clear message that CFO took to Ottawa during a presentation and discussion with members of the Senate’s Agriculture and Forestry Committee.

CFO Vice Chair Ed Benjamins and President and CEO Rob Dougans told the committee during an hour long session that while CFO supports Canada's participation in the TPP agreement it was important for the Government to offset additional access by enforcing the existing rules and regulations that have provided opportunities for importers to avoid riff charges.

“For this system to work effectively, all three pillars must be supported by regulators at all levels, said Benjamins.  “For the federal government, that means effective trade policy and border controls.”

In addition to trade, the Senate Committee also discussed CFO Innovations such as the Artisanal Chicken and the Specialty Breeds programs and the importance of putting consumers first.
