CFO thanks Premier for Government’s robust support for supply management and Ontario farmers

BURLINGTON, ON - October 17, 2017 - Ed Benjamins, Chair of Chicken Farmers of Ontario (CFO), expressed his thanks and gratitude for the support and encouragement that the Ontario Government has provided to Ontario farmers and the agricultural supply management system.

“We are extremely grateful for Premier Wynne’s strong statement of support for Ontario farmers and the Canadian and Ontario supply management systems,” said Mr. Benjamins. “Her comments and those of her colleague Jeff Leal, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, demonstrate their understanding of the contributions and value that supply management farmers and processors in the chicken, egg, dairy, and turkey sectors bring to Ontario."

"Our farmers appreciate the resolute support we have received from both the Ontario and Canadian Governments during these difficult NAFTA negotiations," said Rob Dougans, President and CEO of CFO. "We will continue to work to ensure that Canada's agri-food economy continues to meet the needs of Canadian consumers, farmers, and processors."

Benjamins and Dougans were reacting to the statement released by Premier Wynne earlier today with regard to US agricultural demands at the NAFTA negotiations in which she stated in part that “Ontario stands in agreement with Canada that negotiating supply management is simply a non starter...We will continue to work with the federal government in the fight to make sure the supply management system stays in place."
