Chicken Farmers meet with Federal Representatives in Ottawa

Supply Management & Trade discussed at CFC lobby day

OTTAWA, ON – MAY 8, 2019 – Representatives of Chicken Farmers of Ontario (CFO) joined chicken farmers from across the country to meet with Members of Parliament, Ministers, and Senators as part of the Chicken Farmers of Canada’s (CFC) federal lobby day.
These annual meetings are an opportunity to share updates and information about the chicken industry and reaffirm support for supply management among federal government representatives.
“On behalf of chicken farmers from across the province, I want to acknowledge the federally elected officials and Senators from Ontario that took the time to discuss our strong, healthy, and growing chicken industry,” said Ed Benjamins, Chair of Chicken Farmers of Ontario, “Our meetings were very positive and productive, and we appreciate the widespread strong support for responsible supply management.”
This year, chicken farmers advocated for the implementation of mitigation measures in response to recent market access being granted through the Canada-United States-Mexico (CUSMA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), and urged all parties to commit to not granting any further access in future trade deals.
“Our farm families that receive unsubsidized fair farm prices under Canada’s supply management system are looking for commitment to strategies that fairly support farmers and maintain our successful supply managed systems. Allowing more imports would serve only to weaken the import control pillar of our responsible supply management system – a system that has worked well for Canadians for over 50 years!” said Rob Dougans, President and CEO of Chicken Farmers of Ontario, “CFO is very pleased to join our colleagues from the across the country to bring these common priorities to the attention of the Federal government. Together, we are working to ensure that the chicken industry remains strong, stable, and growing.”
CFO represents more than 1,300 family-run farms that collectively ensure Ontario consumers enjoy a reliable supply of safe, healthy, high quality, premium Ontario-grown chicken.
