BURLINGTON, ON – April 8, 2020
– Chicken Farmers of Ontario (CFO) welcomes four new applicant families to the growing chicken industry through the CFO New Entrant Chicken Farmer program.
Ed Benjamins, CFO Chair, digitally announced the Board’s approval of these successful candidates last month.
“It is with great pleasure that we welcome and congratulate these new farming-families into the Ontario chicken industry through the Board’s New Entrant Chicken Farmer program,” said Benjamins. “This program supports new farmers joining the industry, while providing education, training and mentorship to guide a successful transition for new businesses.”
Traditionally, the successful applicants are recognized and introduced formally at CFO’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), but due to health risks posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 AGM was cancelled.
The successful applicants of the 2019 CFO New Entrant Chicken Farmer program are:
Dave and Janelle Elliott, District 3
Dave and Lisa Kemp, District 9
Joseph and Erin Scott, District 1; and
Terry and Susan Zehr, District 8
“Dave and I both grew up on family-farms,” said Janelle Elliott. “We wanted to become chicken farmers to grow and diversify our family-farm, not only for ourselves and our children, but for future generations.”
The program finalists come from a wide variety of farming backgrounds and were selected following an extensive application review by a panel of financial and farming experts.
“We want to say a big thank you to Chicken Farmers of Ontario for giving us this opportunity to be a part of the chicken industry,” said Terry Zehr.
The New Entrant Chicken Farmer program supports qualified new farmers in joining the chicken industry by providing education, training and further assistance to ensure that they make a successful transition into the business. Since 2012, CFO has welcomed twenty-eight new chicken farming families through the program.
