Ontario chicken farmers join the CBC’s Sounds of the Season to help fight hunger this holiday season

TORONTO, December 4, 2015 – Chicken farmers across the province have been actively fighting hunger in their communities, and this holiday season that effort has been multiplied. Chicken Farmers of Ontario (CFO) is slated to present a $10,000 donation to the Daily Bread Food Bank at Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) Sounds of the Season event in Toronto, Ontario this afternoon.

“Our farmers understand the need to raise awareness of the plight of their fellow Ontarians both in urban and in rural areas of the province,” said Henry Zantingh, Chair of CFO. “We are very pleased to be able to contribute to the CBC’s Sounds of the Season event on behalf of the Daily Bread Food Bank.”

CFO Cares, the Chicken Farmers of Ontario’s food bank donation program, was launched in January 2015. The program is designed to enable farmers to donate fresh chicken to food banks in their communities, while working together with the Ontario Association of Food Banks. With over 300 Ontario chicken farmers already participating in the program, CFO Cares’ commitments are expected to reach the retail equivalency of almost $800,000 worth of chicken.

Food banks across Ontario have expressed the urgent need for fresh food donations beyond the traditional non-perishable food items,” stated Rob Dougans, President and CEO, CFO. “The CFO Cares program provides a way for our farmers to ensure that a steady supply of fresh, locally grown chicken is made available to the food bank system on regular basis.”
