Registered Dieticians visit local chicken barn to learn about Canadian chicken farming

NIAGARA REGION, ON – October 24, 2019 – On October 23, 2019, Chicken Farmers of Ontario (CFO) participated in Farm & Food Care Ontario’s annual Registered Dieticians Farm Tour. The tour provided dieticians with direct access to local farms, giving them the opportunity to see how food is grown across the province and to ask questions about the standards of care shown across the Ontario agriculture industry.

The first stop of the tour featured the DeVries family chicken farm, where Melissa DeVries – a CFO farmer-member and a farmer-elected District Committee Representative – and her family took the group on a tour of their broiler chicken operation and demonstrated how chicken is raised across the country. A portion of this tour included an explanation of the comprehensive national Animal Care and On-Farm Food Safety Programs that all Canadian chicken farmers follow, which ensures a consistent supply of safe, healthy, high quality chicken.

“The Farm & Food Care Registered Dieticians Tour is a great way to show first-hand how our food is produced in Ontario,” said Melissa. “My family and I were thankful for the opportunity to meet with this wonderful group of dieticians to share how passionate we are about raising our chickens, and to provide insight into the level of care that all chicken farmers across the province show while raising their flocks.”

The second part of the day included a tour of Vineland Growers Cooperative - the longest continually run co-operative in Ontario. The co-operative specializes in packing, storing, marketing and distributing locally grown peaches, nectarines, cherries, plums, grapes and pears across the country.

Farm & Food Care Ontario is a whole-sector coalition made up of representatives from all farming types and associated businesses. Their objective is to tell the stories of farmers who work hard to grow fresh Ontario food, and to build public trust in food and farming in Ontario and across Canada.
